What to expect

How an order works, start to finish.

Real wood from a working sawmill behaves differently than a stack of studs from the big box store. Here is the process, the timelines and what to expect from the wood itself.

About the wood itself

True dimension

We cut to full size. A 6x6 is 6" by 6", not 5½. Plan your hardware and joinery for that.

Rough-sawn means rough

Expect saw marks, some wane and the occasional knot. That is the look. If you'd rather have it smooth, ask and we can send it out to be surfaced.

Wood is gonna wood

It moves, takes on water and dries out again, kiln dried or not, and we don't warranty against it. Timbers with the heart in them are going to check, and that's normal. For interior finish work, go with kiln dried.

No two boards are the same

Color, grain and knots vary log to log. That's the point of buying local.

Pickup rules

  • Walk-ins are fine during hours, but the mill keeps running, so you may wait for a stopping point. Bigger loads need an appointment.
  • Bring a truck or trailer that can handle the load
  • Bring your own straps. You're responsible for securing it.
  • We load lumber with the Pettibone or Bobcat. Firewood you load yourself.
