The work
Real talk: most days start with stacking, sorting and moving lumber. Same motion, thousands of times, in whatever weather Colorado throws at us. The people who stick around get to learn the equipment and the mill.
What's the most physical or repetitive job you've stuck with? How long did you stay, and what kept you there?
Week three. You're sore, it's hot, and it's the same pile you started Monday. What keeps you coming back? I finish what I start I want to earn my way onto the equipment I need the paycheck, and that's enough for me Honestly, I'm not sure yet
Taking correction
Think of the last time someone corrected you at work and they were right. What did they say, and what did you change?
The crew lead is younger than you, with less time in the trade. He corrects you in front of everyone. Your first move: Fix it now. If it bugs me, I talk to him later, one on one. Explain why I did it my way Do it his way, but I'm irritated Push back right there
Without being told
Tell us about something that needed doing at a past job that nobody asked you to do. Did you do it?
You're caught up and nobody's around to give you the next job. You: Find what needs doing and do it Go find someone and ask Clean up my area and wait Take a break until someone shows up
Phones on the clock: Stay put away. Breaks and real emergencies only. A quick check now and then I need to be reachable all day Earbuds in while I work
It's 7:50 and you're going to be 20 minutes late. You: Call or text right now Just get there as fast as I can Explain when I get there
Where you're headed
A year from now, what do you want to be able to run or do here that you can't do today? Why that?
What's the best thing anyone ever taught you at work? How did they teach it?
Rate yourself, 1 (working on it) to 5 (dialed in). We'll check with your references.
